blizzard bag #3

yep. another snow day, but this was the first one actually caused by just snow! i think we got 5 inches or so but it was coming down fairly heavy in the morning and it would not have been safe to try and get the buses out. so madelyn got to do the activities for "blizzard bag #3".  they changed a lot of the activities and it now included assignments for art, music and gym. madelyn only needed to do the music assignment, but she insisted on doing the art one too. today's felt much more like a school day worth of work.

the math assignment was to "practice for 15 minutes".  madelyn got her "doubles" flashcards and used cheerios to teach her brothers how to add. they didn't want to stop when the timer i had set for 15 minutes went off - so they didn't.

next, she had to measure two family members' hands and answer some questions.

the social studies assignment was more difficult for me - i had to remember what it was like when i was in 1st grade! i have lots of memories from elementary school, but i was having trouble being certain which ones were from 1st grade.

and then it was more writing - "write a letter to your mom and dad to convince them to go somewhere. be sure to list good reasons for them to take you there."

madelyn was loosing steam by this point. i think it has more to do with her brothers playing without her that it has to do with the actual work. so we switched to science where she had to just explain liquids and solids. next she just had to read me a book and talk about the problem and solution in the story. she read "prairie day" by laura ingalls wilder.

last it was time for her to complete a "music" assignment. reading over the options, i was a little worried about how madelyn was really going to be able to complete one of these.  i don't think she knows a single recording artist by name, let alone the name of any songs (this is mostly intentional on our part). but when she read over the choices, she said that it was easy and quickly wrote out her answers.  my heart melted when i read her beautiful words. this one is going in her 'baby' box.

a friend challenged me with my own 'blizzard bag' assignment based on a good morning girls application i had from today's reading (philippians 4:8) - the things my mind should focus on written on a card to help me refocus on a day i am in a "funk".

today was a very productive snow day!  love.
