manning's birthday present

mason got to be the test ride in manning's birthday present.  the idea is that we can take some family bike rides!  that should be fun (and interesting!).  love.

seatbelt pillow

i have been a sewing machine (bah-du-dum) for the past three days making library totes for the nieces, nephews and our own kids (i had not made them any yet) and then today i got started on a few projects for our upcoming trip.

madelyn was pretty excited about her seat belt pillow for sleeping in the car.  she had to give me a demonstration about what it would be like when she was actually asleep.
it just occurred to me that i should make one for me in the passenger seat!  okay, like i need one more thing to do before we leave...  love.

orange you glad it's orange?

i have mentioned that maddux' first favorite color is orange (just like madelyn and mason before him), but it is SO his favorite color that it deserved a post.  doing the laundry is almost comical because almost ever item he wears is orange.  mason even shares what clothes he has that are orange.  i must have pulled 10 orange shirts out of the dryer yesterday (pure coincidence that we have so many in the first place, most were hand-me-downs from a friend).  and when he can wear all orange, like today, he is thrilled!  he wore orange underwear, orange shorts, orange shirt and orange socks.

beyond choices of things for him always having to be orange (foods, cups, clothes, treats, etc.), he has to show us every single thing that is his "favorite color".  the worst instance was when we went to the mall to get matt's tea for father's day.  he had to show me every single cell phone case in the kiosk we passed at the mall.  every single one.  there were at least 10 on each of the four sides.  and i can't just look, there has to be a conversation.

maddux:  mommy, show you something.
me:  okay.
maddux:  orange!  my favorite color!
me: wow!  that sure is orange.
maddux:  mommy, show you something!
me: i saw it, maddux, an orange case.
maddux:  no, mommy!  look, show you something.  my favorite color!
me: yes, maddux, i see the orange case.

and on and on times 10 on each side.

it is really cute how surprised and delighted every time he finds something orange.  but it really slows us down when we have to all double back to admire the orange packaging he saw out of the corner of his eye down an aisle.  he throws a fit until we all look at it and acknowledge how neat it is that it is orange.

speaking of favorite colors, madelyn has finally come around to black.  after years of saying that she liked every color except black, it is now her favorite color.  i know i wear it all the time!  love.

madelyn's 6-year check-up

madelyn's six-year check-up was pretty straightforward and easy - well, except for the one hour wait before we saw the doctor!  oh well.  i just told myself that they were seeing some sick patients or giving others so extra time.  i actually am pretty understanding about waiting as long as when i/we are finally seen, they don't try to rush us out in an attempt to get back on schedule.

i did have a few concerns to discuss with the doctor and she agreed with my current course of action (like with her mystery stomach pains) so that always makes me feel good, like i wasn't ignoring/writing-off something more serious.

here are her stats:
height: 49 inches (96th percentile)
weight: 50.6 pounds (77th percentile)
bmi: 38th percentile

the doctor thought everything looked great.  again, we are so blessed to have healthy children.  love.

mason turns 4!

what, what?!  (see picture) mason's four!  mason has been looking forward to his birthday all week (well, longer but it just gets more exciting as his siblings start to have birthdays). he was the first one awake (well, after me) and went to see his balloons.  only we didn't put them out!!  i felt horrible.  matt had gone out to pick them up yesterday but we forgot to bring them in out of the car.  thankfully, mason was very forgiving and was just happy to have them and get his breakfast of choice - frosted mini-wheats.  we all ate them in honor of mason this morning.  (he and madelyn had been arguing for the past several days about whether madelyn would eat mini-wheats or cheerios.)

since we didn't have to drive as far for mason's birthday surprise outing, we let him open presents this morning.  as you might guess, he had lots of willing helpers.  listen to his generous heart in the video - so mason...

the best part about watching mason open presents is that he is grateful for everything he receives - every card, every pair of socks, everything.  there is never a single moment that shows any indication of greed.  he is just so humble and appreciative.

when he was all done opening them he commented that he got a lot of presents.  he was a little overwhelmed with how many new things he had.  and we still hadn't given him his 'big' gift yet!

and mason was more than willing to share.  it fact, madelyn helped herself and mason was fine with it.  so generous.

the birthday boy ready to go on his big adventure.
we just love to keep the kids in suspense.  matt and i had a great time offering clues and listening to their discussion and guesses on our hour long drive to the cleveland zoo.  we picked the cleveland zoo because it was fairly close but not somewhere we go very often and they have a dinosaur exhibit for the summer.  once we got off the exit the kids starting seeing the dinosaur banners and were guessing that we were going to a dinosaur park, but maddux held firm at "zoo" for his guess.
they had painted dinos all over the zoo in different themes.
we were disappointed that the elephants where inside today.  it wasn't going to be nearly as warm as it was during our trip to the toledo zoo on saturday.  today wasn't even supposed to reach 80 degrees so we only had to worry about the rain, which held off all day.

maddux couldn't let mason be the only one with a picture with the elephants.

koala in a tree outside
mason was disappointed to not get to play at the playgrounds at the toledo zoo but since it was his birthday, when he asked today we let him play for a while.
we had to go up (and then down) an 80 feet climb by a zig-zag boardwalk.  maddux thought it was pretty cool that he could run ahead and look up at us.
at the koala house we were told that mason could get a birthday kiss from the giraffes.  not only did he not get a kiss, but when we bought a leaf of lettuce for him to feed the giraffe, they had him feed it before i could even get inside the gate.  i had my camera out and ready too but i still couldn't get a picture.  they tried to get the giraffe to come back over but it wouldn't and then they started to try and rush me out to let someone else have a turn.  oh well, he still got to feed a giraffe.
now for the big exhibit - dinosaurs!  once we got over to it i realized it was the same one that we went to a few years ago at the milwaukee zoo when we lived in wisconsin.  because there was an additional cost, i took the three bigs in while matt went to get manning a clean diaper.

petting a bearded dragon
there were several of these sandbox fossil digs throughout the walk.

t-rex
there were a family of deer behind some of the dinosaurs.  i was surprised that the 'roaring' did not scare them away.
mason asked to have his picture taken with all of these 'babies'.

the kids knew that the dinosaurs were fake, but they were still just a little bit afraid to get too close to them with all the roaring and moving.
the orangutan climbed down the angled 'log' behind it with the burlap it is wrapped up in pulled over its head like it was hiding.
after leaving the zoo we decided to have a 'snack' at chuck e. cheese.  we were going to go for dinner last night since madelyn and mason had both asked to go there for their birthday but the kids were so out of control that we didn't.  but it worked out great for us because we offered it up when the kids were begging for a $3 pretzel at the zoo.  they were all too happy to wait and go to chuck e. cheese instead.
the kids' favorite game at chuck e. cheese.
ooour plan was to suggest the kids ride bikes and play outside for a little bit when we got home so that i could get video of mason's reaction to his present.  manning had a poopie diaper so we went inside to change that and then maddux needed help wiping off.  while we we helping the littles mason came in to ask about something he found in the garage.  oh, no!  we were missing his face.

but you can see he was pleased.  this is my favorite picture of the day.
we were excited to see how he did after having his balance bike.  he did really great!  the part he will have to practice is braking.  i think the brake handles are a little too far for him to reach easily.  here is his first ride on his new bike.

maddux was discussing the bike trade-down to him and manning.
and here is the big 4-year-old riding all on his own!  you can hear him yell that fact down to me if you listen carefully.  the balance bike was totally worth it!  poor madelyn.  i wish we had had one for her.  she might have training wheels for a while longer.
then it was inside for his requested birthday dinner - hot dogs (vegan), "chicken nuggets" (aka tater tots) and bell peppers and onions (raw).  and daddy made everyone fruit and veggie smoothies - yummy.
the birthday cake
sorry for the awkward video but i am carrying the cake and filming.  at least he got to blow out his candles himself.

we had "super kid" ice cream with the cake.  whose idea was it to give maddux only blue?!  not my best choice.  everyone wanted to show their 'messy' faces.

we had a great day and mason said that he had a really great birthday.  we are so blessed to have him in our family.  love.

what does a lion say?

manning will make a cross between a "roar" and a growl when asked what a lion says.  it is pretty cute and he is very consistent with it being correctly used for a lion.

this reminds me that he points to the adult male in books and says "dada" almost every time.  and he gives very good high fives (meaning he gets a sound on contact).  love

shopping for glasses with daddy

we were looking at glasses for daddy but went to check out the more colorful options in the kids' section while we waited.  the boys were not happy about madelyn trying to put her arms around them for the picture.  love.

tuesday tip - accept their 'best'

this tip came at me as we prepared for 'birthday week'.  i was so intent on making each birthday special and i realized that i was defining "special" instead of letting them pick what they thought was most special.

on any given morning i make something from scratch - pancakes, muffins, casseroles, etc. - but the madelyn wanted buttered toast and mason wanted frosted mini-wheats for their birthdays.  i felt a little bad letting myself get off so easily, but then i realized that it wasn't about me.  they were each just so excited to get to pick what ever they wanted without any input from any one else.  it didn't matter that it was something simple.

what "better" do you find yourself pushing on your kids even though they are content with what they have/do?

love.

just a summer day

once manning woke up around 3, we played downstairs for a while.  i blew up a few balloons and that had everyone pretty happy (if you ever see them on clearance - buy them - it is a great, easy time filler).
manning was happy to stand next to madelyn and play without touching her ponies and instead playing with a wonder pets figurine we have.
maddux was crying for someone to push him in the swing, manning crawled over and started spinning the swing!  he was more or less turning it to see where maddux was and find the crying.  unfortunately, he didn't really do it once i took some video, but you can get the idea.  there was a lot more excitement and laughing the first few times.  i guess manning got tired.

and then maddux started taking pictures.

i went up stairs to get some dinner ready and maddux and mason continued to take pictures - about 75!  these were some of the keepers.

i actually saw mason set up a few toys to photograph.  he played with getting close and then getting far away.  a rather artistic method.
caught red handed with the ipad.

after a dinner of leftovers, we headed out to enjoy the beautiful evening.

first time with bubbles.
madelyn and mason have started riding their bikes down the street to the cul-du-sac.  i know that madelyn is getting confident because she had to be called back most of the time and i don't think she would walk that far without wanting us to be with her.  she even asked to have her training wheels removed!  i told her that she would have to wait for daddy to help her.
i feel so blessed to get to do this with our kids.  thank you, matt.  i love you.
