one of our favorite things about our location is that we can watch the local fireworks display from our driveway. after dinner the kids went out to fly their kites from uncle derek and aunt ashley. there was hardly any wind, but they ran around the yard to keep them up - for at least an hour!
when it started to get dark, i brought out s'mores and the kids hunted fireflies.
and then the mosquitoes started hunting us! yikes! i have never in my life seen mosquitoes like that! it was almost comical. when we found that our citronella candle was only effective for drowning mosquitoes, i fired up google to see what else we could do. when i read that we should wear light colored clothing, i threw down my black sweatshirt and madelyn went in to dress from head to toe in white (including white gloves). next was the suggestions for peppermint oil or lemongrass oil. how about peppermint extract and lemongrass puree? they each worked for about five minutes. but at least we smelled nice!
but we persevered. poor manning fell asleep just as the fireworks began. we discussed just sitting in the car next year as a physical barrier from the mosquitoes. happy 4th, everyone! love.

our 4th of July was very similar (some day I will post about it :)
Less mosquitoes in NC, though. Still there, just not nearly as bad as the Fort.
