mason's first chess tournament

i must say that i was looking forward to this tournament. not just because it was mason's first (and he was super excited), i was excited to have 5-7 hours by myself to write out christmas cards! the timing was perfect! we got there early so that i could get all set up at a table (we were warned that this was one of the smallest sites and the tables filled up quickly). and then the organizers decided that there were too many people from our schools. they moved our school district to another room. a small room. with about six chairs. we were wedged in, standing room only, feeling a little annoyed that we had given up our nice tables before scoping this mess out.
after a few minutes, they opened up another room and moved the high schoolers and middle schoolers in there. at least we were able to move now, but there were still only six chairs for around 40 adults and at least that many students. i ended up sitting on a dirty hardwood floor for six and a half hours. but i had my audio book (headphones) and got all of my christmas cards signed, addressed, stamped and sealed. worth it!

mason finished with a win, two draws and a loss. madelyn finished with two draws and two loses (one to someone from her school so the team got the point either way). both were great showings.

mason's school came in first for their division!

the kids had a great time! my back may never be the same again, but look at these faces.
chess has proven to be a fun activity for them. love.
