movie date

this is my super cute (and quite grown-up looking) movie date this afternoon - mason.  i have mentioned before about how he likes to hold my hand and hasn't been able to as we were out and about so i figured it was time for me to take him on a date.

i was able to get two 'free' tickets to nemo in 3d (one from amazon and one from disney) and thought that this would be a perfect date.  i had wanted to take him to lunch or dinner too but i couldn't be away from manning that long (he isn't doing that great with a bottle from matt).  but mason was perfectly happy to be going on a surprise date with mommy regardless of where we were going.

when we got to the theater i told him what we were doing and he didn't seem all that impressed.  but he did start to get excited when we got inside and he started seeing nemo signs.  ("look.  that shark is wearing glasses.  sharks don't wear glasses!")  it didn't hurt that i told him we could get popcorn and a treat too.

mason was also very taken by all of the bright colors decorating the theater and couldn't stop talking about them when we went into the restroom.  "mommy, some of these doors are green.  that is so silly!"  "why are their stars on the walls?" "they are in there without their kids" "yes, mason, some people come to the movies without their kids." "why are some soap [dispensers] on the walls and some on the mirrors?"  some other ladies in the bathroom were laughing at all of his comments.  the one about someone being in the stall next to us without their kids cracked me up.  mainly because he knows i never go to the bathroom without my kids.

seriously. how cute is this kid?
once mason decided which candy he wanted (junior mints) he asked where were the tables so that he could sit down and eat them.  he seemed genuinely surprised when i told him that we could take our food into the theater and eat it during the movie.

there were a few previews that he found too scary (one for the metropolitan opera had a knife scene for half a second that he couldn't seem to stop asking me about - why?).  and when the preview for monsters inc in 3d came on he said that he didn't want to see that movie and was ready to go.  i reminded him that we weren't here to see that one but nemo and he decided that he could stay.  (he has seen monsters inc more than once so i was a little surprised when he said it was too scary).

i must say that the 3d was better than i thought it was going to be.  generally those kinds of things give me a headache and i already had a migraine coming on so i wasn't sure how i was going to do.  but it was comfortable and added to the movie.  mason made it about three quarters of the way through the movie before he was done wearing the glasses.

nemo is another movie that he has seen quite a few times but i think that the 3d made it a little scarier because he got upset more than once.  i even felt a little bad because it did seem more intense/sad and i wanted this to be a positive outing.  in the end he enjoyed it and was thrilled to have gone and done something by himself with me.

madelyn on the other hand was beside herself with grief when we left.  even though i reminded her that she and i have done several things without the boys.  it sounds like she calmed down quickly and had a relaxed time with daddy and maddux at home (manning was sleeping almost the entire time - thankfully).

so grateful to have a lovely afternoon with our sweet boy.  love.

how wonderful that you got out for a date with Mason. I love all his comments as he was discovering new things - especially the bathroom with no kids one. I can imagine a few scenes off the top of my head that would make 3D Nemo a little more daunting. And I was waiting to read how Madelyn was with you going... I'm sure mine would have (and have been) the same way when one gets solo time (from start to finish).

What a fun time for mason. He looks so grown up and I love the glasses!
