after frantically cleaning up the house for our builder to give a tour in the morning, we took the kids to the zoo as a surprise in the afternoon. they were having an advanced opening of the new reef exhibit for members only. i expected the zoo to be fairly crowded, but it wasn't at all and it was a perfect time to check everything out. the most special part? daddy was joining us! the kids have been so excited to have him home these extra days. mason keeps asking, "is daddy staying home with us today?" he gives a "yay" every time i tell him yes.
the kids were not very excited about standing next to the diving suit photo opp outside the new exhibit. i had to promise that it was just a costume and no one was inside. but they still didn't want to get too close.
maddux enjoyed the exhibit (as did madelyn and mason). here he is with a starfish which reminded me about how he 'sings' twinkle, twinkle little star every time he sees a starfish or star shape in a book.
daddy took them to the 'touch tank' for petting the sting rays. i guess there was also a little shark in the tank too but it was new to the exhibit and not available for touching yet. (you can see matt helping mason reach to pet a sting ray in the picture.)
the kids liked that there were some new items in the 'play area' for this exhibit. they were all afraid of the yellow eel puppet when daddy made it move but once they came around and tried it themselves it wasn't quite as scary.
on our way out they were 'driving' one of those remote control clown fish balloons. maddux kept trying to reach it and couldn't look away. i finally had to go pick him up so that we could head out.
fun times and we look forward to coming back a lot this summer. love.

Fun! I can't believe how tall Madelyn looks next to that scuba guy :) I'm not sure I'd want to stand next to him either.
