kindergarten open house

for our second night at an open house, we drove over to mason's school to check out "kindergarten." we already knew that mason had gotten madelyn's kindergarten teacher (we had made a request), but this was a chance for mason to check out the school as a "student" instead of as a "little brother."

we were fortunate to already know his teacher because she wasn't there! she had some minor surgery that week and wasn't able to attend. we also learned that she was going to miss the first week of school and was hoping to make it for the first day of kindergarten. (the kindergarteners start a week later than the first and second graders.)

even more shocking than his teacher not being there, the principal wasn't there either! i know their principal fairly well after serving on the pto board and it would take a really big deal for him to miss any school event, let alone the kindergarten open house. turns out he had a minor surgery that prevented him from being there too. he was even a little doubtful for the first day of school! i am going to follow up on that one...

we spent a little time in mason's classroom, where madelyn played tour guide as they worked their way down a scavenger hunt, and then headed out into the rest of the school. and it was crazy! there was barely any room to move as families tried to find the different rooms (art, music, etc.). we were trying desperately to keep from loosing our littles in the swarm of people.

the last item on the scavenger hunt is to find the playground. it was a nice evening so we spent some time using it! while there we ran into two of mason's preschool teachers - it is just the sort of community this is here. lovely, but it also means someone will see you if you run out for something without getting yourself together.

mason is thrilled to be starting school! and we are looking forward to seeing what sort of student he becomes. love.
