field trip

madelyn's class took a field trip to the local mall's auntie anne's store to make pretzels.  we just met at the mall instead of dropping her off at school.  i also paid for mason to participate - and get the snack.

they set up a row of tables in the food court and i am proud to report that mason sat at the table and behaved just as well (if not better) than the 3/4-year-olds.  all the kids got little baker hats.  madelyn had some trouble getting hers to stay on because of her buns so we turned it the other way and tucked it over her buns.

then an auntie anne's employee gave an age appropriate presentation on the history of the pretzel.  it was actually pretty interesting.  pretzels were invented by a german monk as a 'little treat' for the new monks and was shaped from bread dough in the way they would cross their arms for prayer.  there were a few things that i wasn't sure about like egg hunts originating as pretzel hunts and "tying the knot" coming from the bride and groom holding a pretzel.  they also told us that the three holes stand for the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
this picture of mason just cracks me up every time i look at it!

maddux was a little fussy and thankfully fell asleep.  i just liked how his finger is on his cheek like he is thinking.
after the history of the pretzel and the company, all of the kids were given some dough so that they could learn how to make pretzels.  mason didn't get beyond rolling it out like a snake - but he didn't eat any.  madelyn did a great job of following the instructions.  i had taken some videos but none of them were post-worthy.

then the kids were invited to take a tour of the kitchen and behind the counter.   madelyn held hands with her teacher, miss natalie, and her friend, ava.  madelyn was so afraid of touching something that she shouldn't (they asked for no touching as one of the tour rules) that she looked terrified.  miss natalie was kind enough to come back out and offer to take mason for me while i stayed out with maddux and the stroller.  again, he behaved wonderfully.

keeping her hands to herself.

i love how they are all looking at the fresh pretzels and resisting the urge to touch.

finally they all got pretzels and lemonade.  the pretzels were not the same ones they had made earlier.
it was a pretty fun field trip.  i was glad that we got to go with her.  there are a few more field trips planned for the rest of the school year too.  i can't wait.  love.
