heart ball 2013

one of matt's doctors was being recognized by the american heart association at the heart ball this year as a "heart champion" and matt and i were able to attend the black tie event. when madelyn heard that we were going to a "ball" she asked if we would get to dance. i told her that this was more of an eat dinner and listen to people speak sort of event and that we wouldn't be dancing.

since it is very rare that we get dressed up (or that i wear make-up), i asked the babysitter to snap a quick picture. the shadow the flash created is most unkind to my arm and back-side, but it is what it is. at least we have a picture.

speaking of the babysitter, we really got a great one! we love our regular babysitter and when she wasn't available we considered my newly acquired back-up. but the back-up sitter is only 13 and we felt that 5+ hours was a long time with all four for someone who hadn't watched them at our house before. (she watches them at mops and helped in mason's vacation bible school class over the summer, so the kids know and like her.) desperate for someone to watch the kids i came up with the idea of asking mason's preschool teacher. we have had friends hire their kids' pre-school teachers to act as nannies in the summertime and that is what gave me the idea. she is young and single and we knew that the kids would be well cared for while we were gone. not to mention that mason loves, loves, loves her. to my surprise, she said that she would babysit for us! and even better, she didn't cost any more that our regular sitter (this was really a pleasant surprise).

we had decided not to tell the kids she was coming until the day of so that they wouldn't have to 'wait' for the day to get here. and then we decided that we would just let them be surprised when she got here. and they were surprised! you could just see the wheels turning in mason's head - "that lady looks like miss r, but miss r is only at school, not at my house". when i confirmed that miss r was here to babysit, he lit up like a christmas tree and couldn't stop smiling. he was so excited and couldn't wait to show her everything.

matt and i had a nice time at the heart ball and miss r said that the kids were really easy. she did say that mason is a little more 'wild' at home than at school but was good for her.

so thankful for a worry-free night out. love.

Lovely picture :) That's like a present - having the teacher babysit! My kids would be over the moon if their teacher came over to watch them :)
