the 100th day of school!

madelyn's class is celebrating the 100th day of school today. they sent home a note asking the kids to dress like they will look when they are 100 years old. when i spoke with madelyn about it she responded, "i will be dead when i am 100 years old," quite matter of factly. and then she asked if i would be alive when i am 100 and we had a nice talk about no one being guaranteed how long they will live and all we can be certain about is that we will be with Jesus in heaven when we die. thinking about it after i dropped her at school, i should have let her dress as an angel and say that she was in heaven at 100 years old. oh well.
she and i went through some options for clothes and hair last night and madelyn had the final say on everything. i was going to draw on some wrinkles, but she didn't want anything on her face.
one thing she did was was curls! i suggested a bun or a scarf to hold her hair back but she wanted curls and her "old fashioned" headband (she calls it that which surprised me the first time because it seems like an odd term for a 5-year-old to come up with on her own). i explained that i wouldn't have time for curls all over, but we could do a bun with some curls hanging down in front. (i think the curl interest came from watching me curl and play with my hair this week trying to figure out what i am going to do for a black tie event we have coming up.)
she wore the long dress i made her, a black fuzzy cardigan, chunky beads and knee high nylons bunched around her ankles that i have from when i used to go to the office.
i just love this picture of her sweet little face!

i had thought about letting her wear sandals with her black socks, but it is cold out and she has to wear tennis shoes to school for recess. i actually think madelyn will be more of the old lady rocking a spiky, grey, pixie-style hair cut and bright colors when she is actually an old lady, but she sure did look cute in her choices for today.

as she told me on the ride to school this morning, "only 80 more days to go!" love.

Adorable. I would wear get outfit. Looks cozy. Interesting insight about not being around at age 100.
